Matt was an amazing person. He was my best friend. He was so smart and always knew how to make me laugh. We never were on our phones while hanging out because of how much we enjoyed each others company. Even though he moved away at a young age, we still stayed in contact throughout high school and college. We have so many great memories together that I’ll always cherish forever. May he rest in peace. Love Vito and The Squicciarini Family

I had the honor and the pleasure of having Matt as a student when he was studying engineering at Stony Brook. We had a number of conversations outside of the classroom about several interesting and innovative ideas he had for energy storage and water desalination. I was impressed with his level of thought, detail and enthusiasm that he had put into his concepts and enjoyed our conversations very much. He was respectful, polite, naturally curious, and very eager to learn. I am truly sorry for your loss.

Matt was undoubtedly one of the kindest, most intelligent people I have met and I feel lucky to have known him and worked with him during our engineering studies at Stony Brook. Our classmates were always amazed by his dedication to science, his creative ideas, and his sense of humor. I send my deepest condolences to all of his loved ones.

Our hearts are beyond heartbroken, for the loss of our beautiful nephew, Matthew. Words seem so insufficient when you lose someone who you love so very much. Yet it is important to honor him in the best way possible. Matt was ever so thoughtful, selfless in his concern for others. He was someone who didn't ask for things for himself, yet gave generously to family, friends and peers. Anything he did receive, he greatly appreciated. Matt was the shining star in our family. The smartest person we knew, by far. He always excelled with his grades and accomplishments. It was often hard to keep up with everything he achieved, and he was always so humble when we congratulated him. We were and will always be, so very proud of Matthew. We marveled at his passion for learning and his natural abilities to teach. He understood technology, more than most, and didn't hesitate to share his knowledge with others. As far back as Middle School, he created tutorial videos for YouTube. They were followed and viewed by so many, including us. This natural leadership he had continued throughout High School, College and Graduate School. He also tutored students, individually, who were grateful to have his help. Matt made tremendous contributions to our world, in his short time with us, and anyone who knew and loved him, has been deeply inspired by him. Matt your beautiful face and smile lit up a room and your light will continue to shine in our minds and hearts. We will always be two of your biggest fans. Our family will never be the same without you. Matthew, you will be missed, each and every day. We can't help but think, that God must have wanted one of his angels back. Heaven's gain is our loss. We love you so much dear Nephew & Godson! Aunt Lenore & Uncle Michael

Hey Matt. They told me I’m supposed to write a tribute to you, how silly right? I know exactly what you would say if you were here and I told you that. I know the exact next words that are coming out of your mouth and Will and Le Si and Vito know them too but unfortunately we all know I can’t say them here haha. A tribute? To you? How can we distill the essence that was you into a mere tribute? How can we distill the life, the happiness, and the intimate moments of time that we shared? How could I crystallize the joy that was the time at Stony Brook where it was just you and I in your car late at night and you drove in circles in your car, spinning us around and making me scared and exhilarated while we screamed to Circles by Post Malone and I asked you what you were doing? Who can even comprehend a memory forced to conform to the lame boundaries of text? You were a friend to me, and yet that doesn’t begin to describe that bond. You were a brother, a special someone, and I always thought you would be by my side for life, cracking dumb jokes and trolling me. Your vigor and passion for life, your intellect and nerdiness for the sciences and for learning drew me to you, but what made me stay was your compassion and kindness. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to find anyone like you again much less have the great honored to be called “best friend forever” by them. I wish you had known how great of a friend you are and how amazing of a human you are. I wish I had told you. Your intellect and vigor drew me to you but it was your compassion and love that made me stay all those years. You were always selfless and concerned with helping others, and even altruistic to a fault. Thank you for the privilege and joy you gave me and the love that you shown me. I’ll never forget them and I’ll try my best to make our dreams fulfilled and to make you proud. I love you so much Matt and I’m sorry I didn’t say it more to you.

Q: How did you meet Matthew? A: I first met Matthew back at Stony Brook in our undergraduate years. We both worked at iCREATE up until the COVID-19 pandemic happened. Each time I saw him though, he was always happy to see me, even if he was working on a complex project. Those usually had to do with renewable energy, and he often explained them to me in great detail. I could tell he truly loved his work. He was kind, intelligent, and passionate in all things. I wish only the best for his family and loved ones.

Nicholas Loo

Until we meet again, Matt.

Matt was an inspiration to me. Despite knowing him very briefly, his work ethic, personality, and passion has made a profound impact on those around him. He was deeply caring and kind. Matt, thank you for your humor, great music taste, and caring about the world. You will be remembered fondly.

Thea Vijaya Kumar

My deepest sympathies to his friends and family for this terrible loss. Matt you were the smartest person I've ever met in my life. But you were also humble, funny, kind, witty and a caring person. I remember when we had both won WolfieTank and even though we were on separate teams, you were the first one to congratulate me for winning. Even though you won too, you chose to reach out and wish me for the win. We had also been on CentriSeed's eboard together, trying to make the club more successful with people's projects. You and I worked together as a team to provide funding, morale, GBM team building exercises and more. I remember how hard you worked on your Solar Balloon. You wanted to see it fly and you kept grinding until you did it. You and I were also in the same classes and we would text each other about how to study better for exams and reassure each other that the HW was indeed difficult and not that we were dumb. I remember that you studied only a few hours before our Thermo exam and got the highest score. You were really something special. I wish I had gone to your birthday party. You had invited me and Sean but we had conflicting plans. I'm looking back on it wishing we would've gone because we knew you had a great party planned. That was just who you were. You made everyone laugh with your jokes and you just had something that made people want to be around you. You left lasting impressions on everyone you knew. I don't think there was ever a time when I talked to you that I didn't either laugh or think how smart you were. Even a whole year after senior design was done, you remembered what project I worked on and you had even sent me a helpful guide on some of the code. You knew that the grading part of the work was done, but you still wanted to provide me something to learn. We all expected you to change the world and you loved sustainability so much. You would have been able to do anything you set your mind to and not only that, everyone else would've had complete faith in you. There's never going to be another person like Matt Mullin, but I'm grateful to have known you for as long as I could. Thank you for all the lives you touched and I hope all of your friends and family can keep a part of you with them throughout their lives. Rest in Peace.

Vincent Peetz

Forever in heart and memory, rest in peace Matt.

Matt, I know your exact reaction to hearing about a sappy tribute being written about you, as someone else pointed out. I am still going to do it anyway haha, but in the brutally honest way that you were. When I first moved to West 102F at Stony Brook during the height of the pandemic, I did not know anyone at all. Honestly, when I first moved in, I did not know what to make of you at all. But as the weeks went on, you became one of my friends. I got to know your dry humor, your ingenuity, and wide range of interests/knowledge. Having to get to know you and our other roommates, I had one of the greatest times of my life with you guys with our endless supply of strange humor and deep conservation. I am very grateful to have met you at the time that I did. I am especially grateful to have met up with you, Zack, and Vincent one last time this winter. I would like to thank you one last time for the privilege of getting to know you and being one of your friends. You will be remembered fondly. Words cannot encompass you. Pictures are a mere glimpse of you. Videos are only echoes of your unparalleled presence in this world. You were my best friend, partner, and family. And the best (and only, as we would joke) boyfriend I've ever had. I fell in love with your brilliant smile, kind heart, goofy personality, and boundless aspirations. Every struggle and hardship in my life was worth it if it led me to you. You fortified me with your love and compassion. You believed in me when I couldn't believe in myself. I am so fortunate to have met you, and I'll treasure our memories together forever. Thank you for the greatest four years of my life. I'll miss you so much. All my love, Le Si
